Bert Robots are intended to be a multi disciplined STEM based teaching tool that may also be an after school project teaching electronics and robotics, teamwork, strategy,patience with curriculum values in:- Programming, Resistant materials, Electro mechanics, Electronics, Control Systems. Thus encompassing all the aspects of STEM.

At Keystage 3 I would use the Bert robot as a taster for an after school club. This assumes that your school does not have an electronics course. If you do then the Bert is a good starter platform allowing pupils to learn step by step how to program a robot and then build the sensors.

I would start with a wiped robot with no sensors then get the pupils to program a motor sequence and test.

After it bumped into everything i would add whiskers and let the pupils program them in.

We would then try to build robot traps that use the software and sensor gaps to trap a robot in a corner perhaps.

We would then keep moving the logic on and may then also add the sonar system.

Students will be able to play to their strengths and expand their skills set.

Bert Robots will be able to be radio controlled as one option.

Bert Robots will be able to become completely autonomous robots.

Bert Robots will have an increasing range of sensors allowing it to react to its environment.

The work on these little robots is ongoing but here is a quick preview of the prototype.

If you need to build a robotics project now and haven't time to wait for this project to be developed I have included the write up and pictures for an article about a original bert robot I developed prior to my employment at Boxford, the Bert robot was published in Data Practice 2008 issue 02/03 and 04.
